Raparperi-Raisan pöytäliinasta tuli mieleeni tarina omasta suvustani.
Isoisäni lapsuudenkodissa elämä oli niukkaa, kuten suurimmassa osassa sen ajan suomalaiskodeista. Turha suunsoitto ja ilonpito eivät kuuluneet asiaan. Isoisäni loi myöhemmin hyvän uran ja ansaitsi niin, että saattoi lähettää äidilleen joka kuukausi rahaa. Helpottaisi vähän vanhenevien vanhempien elämää. Myöhemmin hän lahjoitti silkkisen pukukankaan äidilleen 50-vuotissyntymäpäiväksi. Tämä ei ollut koskaan omistanut oikein hienoa pukua.
Kun vaatimatonta jäämistöä alettiin vanhempien kuoleman jälkeen jakamaan, löytyi mm. harmaa silkkikangaspakka kääreessään, koskemattomana, sekä pankkitili jonne oli kerätty kaikki vuosikymmenten aikana lähetetyt rahat. Isoisälleni se oli paha isku.
Olen usein ajatellut sitä, miten vain jokunen vuosikymmen taaksepäin suomalaiset ovat olleet yhtä kouluttamattomia, kädestä suuhun eläviä kuin suuri osa ghanalaisista nyt. Ghanalainen muori, jolle poika lähettää rahaa, kuitenkin toimisi (tämä on siis stereotypia) melkein päinvastaisesti. Ensisijalla elämässä ovat upeat puvut ja mahtavat, monipäiväiset juhlat - erityisesti hautajaiset - joihin riittää aina rahaa vaikka perhe olisi miten köyhä. Sen jälkeen kun nämä perustarpeet on tyydytetty, tulevat koulumaksut, monipuolinen päivittäinen ravinto, asuminen, muu omistaminen... Säästöön ei varmaankaan jäisi rahaa eikä kankaita.
Miksi yhtä köyhä suomalainen ja ghanalainen toimivat noin eri tavoilla? Nopea arvaus: Suomen talvi pistää koko eliöpiirin vetäytymään kuoreensa, säästämään kuukausikaupalla, kun taas Ghanan luonto jakelee nopeasti mädäntyviä hedelmiään ympäri vuoden, ja niistä on parempi nauttia silloin kun ne ovat käsillä.
Nykysuomalaisilla vain taitaa tiiviiden asuntojen, ylenpalttisen lämmityksen ja muutenkin korkean aineellisen elintason myötä olla ainakin Euroopan trooppisimmat olosuhteet talvisaikaan. Eikun pilettämään. Huomenna kuolemme.
